In this class, instructor Devon Brits (AgriProtein, Soldier Fly Technologies, LSU), will lead you through the essentials of black soldier fly, with an emphasis on production, process, and profitability. After a brief discussion of the why's of insect agriculture, Mr. Brits will take participants through a sample 5-ton-per-day facility: setup, space usage, larvae hatching needs, pricing models and ranges, revenue streams, and profitability figures. From there, you will learn what you can do now to get started, and what your path looks like from concept to capital. The class will end with a Q&A session. This course is intended for decisionmakers contemplating adding BSFL as a waste management option to their existing farms or businesses, for entrepreneurs contemplating starting a new BSFL facility, and for recent graduates and career changers interested in entering the field as more valuable employees.
